A core component of my internship involved the meticulous processing and digitization of the 'Frist Collection,' comprising photographs and documents from former Senator Bill Frist. This project, directly tied to the Albert Gore Research Center's new building funded by Senator Frist, provided invaluable hands-on experience in the electronic description of archival materials.
The digitization process demanded a high degree of precision and a thorough understanding of archival best practices. I was responsible for organizing, scanning, and cataloging a diverse range of documents, ensuring their systematic arrangement and accessibility.
A key aspect of my work was determining and assigning appropriate metadata to each digitized item. This required me to assess the historical relevance of the materials, enabling effective prioritization and enhancing their discoverability for researchers and the public. I learned to create detailed and accurate electronic descriptions of archival materials via Excel spreadsheet before transferring the metadata to PastPerfect Museum Software, ensuring that each item's context, content, and provenance were clearly captured. This process honed my ability to translate physical archival materials into accessible digital resources, a crucial skill in modern archival practice.
